Today’s Daily Prompt: Explain why you chose your blog’s title and what it means to you
When naming my blog, I had no real thought about who would be reading it,but just what I wanted to have as the main message. Which is rambling, authored by me.
I didn’t want to use my real name or any nicknames I have associated with other sites (that’s why my twitter isn’t sortaginger). So it really came down to the first thing I thought of that would fit on the header. I have explained, somewhat, why my blog is named what it is here and here, but in the spirit of the game I will play again. Ready, OK!
Sorta– Meaning kind of, not completely or full, or in my case slowly fading
Ginger–A term, used a lot in Great Britain (or so says Google), referring to red hair. Usually viewed as a slam (again, Google says so), Prince Harry being one of the gingy sort has made it a little more endearing. Gingers also have other traits, according to South Park:
“..people with red hair, freckles and pale skin—are disgusting, inhuman, unable to survive in sunlight, and have no souls; all because of a condition called ‘Gingervitis’”.–Eric Cartman
Ramblings–My catch-all term for whatever it is I put on here. Some days are more composed than others. This is not one of those days. Rambling on…
of a–OK, if you need either of these explained, please send me a personal message. I don’t want to call you out in the public blog-world.
Quasi–see above definition for “Sorta”
Redhead–A person with red hair. Look, a Wikipedia definition!
Red hair occurs naturally on approximately 1–2% of the human population. (Yay!)It occurs more frequently (2–6%) in people of northern or western European ancestry, (Me) and less frequently in other populations. (Not Me) Red hair appears in people with two copies of a recessive gene on chromosome 16 which causes a mutation in the MC1R protein (Alright then!).
Red hair varies from a deep burgundy (Natural Instincts “Red Mahoghany”) through burnt orange (Why?) to bright copper (me as a kid, now with yearly fade). It is characterized by high levels of the reddish pigment pheomelanin and relatively low levels of the dark pigment eumelanin (yep). The term redhead (originally redd hede) has been in use since at least 1510 (take that, blondes!) . It is associated with fair skin color (me again), lighter eye colors (gray, blue-I’m a combo green, and hazel), freckles (unfortunately), and sensitivity to ultraviolet light (squints out window…yep)
Cultural reactions have varied from ridicule to admiration (who are these admirers? I want names and marital statuses, now!); many common stereotypes exist regarding redheads (I’m not Irish!) and they are often portrayed as fiery-tempered (maybe, but it has NOTHING TO DO WITH MY HAIR!!).
Ahem. Sorry about that. Here’s a picture showing my current level of redheadedness. Or quasi-fading-sorta red shade. Reds fade faster than any hair color, ask anyone who colors their hair and they will agree, but it applies to natural reds too:
That was so much fun, let’s do the sub-title, shall we!
Random Posts–Everything from rants, stupidity, Daily Prompts and mental health issues. I don’t follow any real form or reason, just write what I feel like that day.
About Eating Disorders,– I grew up anorexic, I have been bulimic most of my adulthood, including now even though I am almost 36 years old and overweight. See my “Diary of a Fat Bulimic” category for more posts on this. I purposely did not want the eating disorder issue to be in the main title because I do ramble about other things, and I don’t want this to be the only thing I focus on when staring at the screen for inspiration.
Recovery,–This is when I started the blog, my first attempt at getting help for the eating disorder even though I have had therapy over the years for depression after major life events (death, divorce, job issues). It is slow going, and as of right now, feels pretty helpless.
Parenthood–I am the single parent of a mostly-cool teenager.
and Nail Polish–Sure, there are a lot of nail polish and makeup blogs already in the internet world. I follow quite a few of them to get ideas or just to drool over polish I can never find around here. But I like to have fun trying out new colors and new things and it works as filler when I can’t think of anything else to type on Monday mornings.
So there you go. A post to take the place of the more depressing one I was ready to write first thing this morning. Not that it will stop me from posting it later, but thank you DP for the welcome distraction6 This many people loved/liked this post!
